Primary succession occurs when there are no organisms in an environment (e.g. after a catastrophic event/destruction of an ecosystem.)
Primary succession begins with pioneer species able to survive in the environment.
As time passes, diversity of producers increases.
Diversity of producers leads to an increase in diversity of consumers.
Increasing complexity of the food web develops.
As conditions in the environment change new species increase in population and older species reduce in population / succession occurs.
The ecosystem becomes a climax community in many cases.
Cyclical succession occurs when the environment is regularly disrupted.
The disruption does not destroy the whole system/allows some species to survive.
A secondary succession then occurs allowing the ecosystem to recover.
Periodic fires / locust infestation / flooding may cause cyclical succession (accept one example of a cause of cyclical succession.)
