When Pyrex glass is heated or cooled, it will expand or contract much less than ordinary glass due to its small coefficient of linear expansion.  The smaller changes in dimensions result in lower internal stresses than would be present in ordinary glass.  Thus there is less of a chance of breaking the Pyrex by heating or cooling it.
