The researchers wanted to select strains tolerant to drought. To simulate the effects of drought, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added at a concentration of 20% to experimental petri dishes while distilled water (without PEG) was added to control petri dishes.

Germination percentage was calculated as follows:

G%=$\frac{n}{N}$ x 100%

where ‘n’ is number of seeds germinated on the final day and ‘N’ is the total number of seeds.

Germination pace is expressed as GP

GP=$\frac{N}{\sum(n✖g)}$ x 100%

Where N is the total number of germinated seeds at the end of the experiment and n is the number of germinated seeds on day g (1, 2, 3,..).

The results obtained are shown below:


1.Based on the results shown, explain how a drought is likely to affect a crop such as barley.

2.State another abiotic factor, apart from water, that is required for germination of seeds.
