Greenhouse gases are emitted all along the food supply chain. It starts with deforestation to change land for agriculture. On the farm, fossil fuels are burned to run machinery, and both animals and plants may release greenhouse gases. A small portion of the total greenhouse gases is released after this in processing, transporting, packaging and selling the food.
With reference to the Figure, estimate what fraction of beef’s greenhouse gas emissions are likely to be from methane, manure (animal urine ad faeces) and farm machinery.
